According to Norse Mythology, all of creation is divided up into nine realms (or worlds) which exist among the roots of the world tree, Yggdrasil. In the oldest traditions these were:

Asgard – Realm of the Aesir Alfheim – Realm of the Bright Elves Jotunheim – Realm of the Giants Midgard – Realm of the Humans Muspelheim – Realm of the Fire Giants. Nidavellir – Realm of the Dwarves. Niflheim – Realm of Ice and Mist. Svartalfheim – Realm of the Black Elves. Vanaheim – Realm of the Vanir.
